Why We Sell ‘By the Meter’: Understanding Cactus Growth and Sizing

If you’ve bought garden plants before, pricing by length rather than “a plant” probably looks unusual. It makes more sense once you understand how columnar cacti actually grow.

A cactus doesn’t come in “a size”

A potted houseplant is usually sold at a fairly predictable size for its age and pot — a grower can say “this is a 1-liter plant” and you know roughly what you’re getting. Columnar cacti like San Pedro don’t work that way. A single healthy stem in our garden might be anywhere from half a meter to well over two meters depending on how long it’s been growing, and — critically — a cutting of any length taken from that stem will root and grow into a full, independent plant on its own. There’s no meaningful sense in which a 30cm piece and a 1.5m piece are “the same product” at different growth stages; they’re genuinely different amounts of plant.

What length actually buys you

Longer cuttings are older, thicker, and closer to a mature, garden-ready specimen — plant a 1.5m cutting and you have something that already looks established in your garden from day one. Shorter cuttings are cheaper and root just as reliably, but take longer to reach that same visual presence, since they’re starting from less accumulated growth. Neither is a “better” choice in absolute terms — it’s a genuine trade-off between upfront cost and how long you’re willing to wait for a mature-looking plant.

Why a per-meter price is the honest option

Because a cutting’s value scales fairly directly with how much plant it actually is, pricing per meter (or per length tier) is simply a more honest reflection of what you’re paying for than a single flat price regardless of size would be. It also means you can choose based on your own budget and patience rather than being limited to whatever fixed sizes happen to be in stock — from a modest 30cm starter piece up to a substantial, near-mature 1.5m section, or the full 10-meter Bumper Box if you’re planting at scale.
